Cleaned and Coated Rod

The Cleaning Process

Traceability
In order to maintain the identity of the rod during the cleaning process each coil is labelled with a special label which is resistant to the chemicals in the cleaning process.

Pickling
Removal of the scale from the surface of the rod takes place in fully inhibited hydrochloric acid at ambient temperatures. The inhibitor protects the steel wire rod surface and ensures that no localised pitting occurs.

Rinsing
In order to remove all traces of acid the rod is immersed in a static bath of water and then subjected to a high pressure water rinse.

The Coating Process
The following coatings are available:

  • Phosphate and soap
  • Phosphate and lime
  • Copper and lime
  • Soap only
  • Lime only

At the end of the cleaning and coating process the rod is dried in a baker.
